Four alive in consolations for Lehigh after day one

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Thursday night’s second session of the 77th NCAA Championships saw Lehigh’s last wrestler eliminated from the championship bracket, when freshman David Craig lost to Michigan’s No. 4 seed Tyrel Todd 6-2 at 184 pounds. The Mountain Hawks did win three out of six consolation bouts on the evening, and have four wrestlers still alive heading into Friday morning’s consolation rounds.

“I’m pleased to have four guys still wrestling,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “We came in with nobody in the top 12 and had some tough draws. We definitely came in hoping for some magic but couldn’t come through with any upsets”

Craig yielded two first period takedowns in his rematch with Todd, who won 3-1 in sudden victory during the regular season meeting at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Todd added an escape and a riding time point to knock the Mountain Hawks completely out of the championship bracket.

In first round consolation action, Matt Ciasulli bounced back from a first round loss with a convincing 9-2 win over Central Michigan’s Eric Kruger. Ciasulli will face Oklahoma’s Kyle Terry on Friday morning in the second round of consolations.

At 157, junior Dave Nakasone remained alive, picking up a second period reversal and third period takedown to defeat Jared Hostetter of Millersville 4-3. Nakasone will face Drexel’s Ryan Hluschak on Friday.

Senior Paul Weibel ended the session on a high note, with a first period pin of A.J. Brooks, Lehigh’s first fall of the tournament. Weibel will face Iowa’s Matt Fields in the second consolation round.

Three Mountain Hawks saw their season’s come to an end in the consolations. Sophomore Matt Fisk game up two early takedowns and could only muster one two-point near fall of his own as he fell to Chattanooga’s Javier Maldonado 5-3. Fisk’s season ends at 25-11. Freshman Seth Ciasulli fell 5-0 to Christian Staylor of Old Dominion, wrapping up his campaign at 19-16.

Senior Matt Cassidy’s season and Lehigh career came to an end with an11-5 loss to Cal Poly’s Matt Monteiro. Cassidy finishes his career with a 15-10 record as a two time NCAA qualifier and a one time EIWA Champion.

In the team race, Minnesota placed seven wrestlers in the quarterfinals and leads second place Missouri by 4.5 points. Iowa State, Penn State and Iowa round out the top five. Lehigh sits in a tie for 35th place with 6.5 points.

The 77th NCAA Championships continue on Friday morning with the championship quarterfinals and two rounds of consolations, beginning at 11:00 am. The quarterfinals will be televised on ESPNU (DirecTV channel 609) and audio coverage of all of Lehigh’s matches can be heard online at lehighsports.com with streaming powered by Yahoo! Sports.
