BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Behind a strong defensive effort and a number of impressive showings from a host of newcomers, Lehigh opened its 2006 home season with a 1-0 shutout of an always tough Fairleigh Dickinson team on Saturday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Sophomore transfer Jim Taranto scored the game-winner for the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 1-0 on the young season.

“Anytime you get your first win at home is a good start,” said head coach Dean Koski.  “Fairleigh Dickinson played like I thought they would—poised and very seasoned.”

Senior Joe Verdi’s free kick landed right at the top of the 18 and took a wicked bounce that tricked one of the Knight defenders and goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski.  Taranto then collected the loose ball and shot it to the empty net, scoring what would prove to be the game-winning goal, in his first-ever game as a Mountain Hawk.

Jim Taranto had a very good game and was strong at the critical points,” said Koski.

Fairleigh Dickinson had a tough time penetrating Lehigh’s defense.  The Knights were held to just five shots for the entire game—none of which were on goal.  Fifth year senior Jim Morahan posted a shutout in goal for the Brown and White in his first-ever career start, as he helped lead Lehigh over an FDU team that was ranked as high as seventh in the country in 2005.  The Mountain Hawks were dominant in the shots category, unleashing 21 on the evening, to the Knights 5, with a lineup that featured many new faces, including two freshmen starters.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the team travels to Temple University for a 3:30 game.
