The three hits give McBride 69 hits to this point in 2006, just one shy of a Lehigh single season record (70) established by Eric Hoffman in 2002.
After center fielder Joe Ercolano reached on an error to start the bottom of the first, McBride doubled him home to give the home team a one-nothing lead.
Coppin State tied the game with a run of senior Adam Marr in the top of the second, but Lehigh quickly responded with six unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. McBride once again led the charge with a two-RBI hit through the left side, and senior left fielder Andrew Smith plated two more with a hard hit single to left-center. Right fielder Nick Bet then singled home Smith to give the Mountain Hawks a 7-1 advantage.
Up comfortably 7-2 in the eighth, McBride singled home Ercolano to give the Brown and White an 8-2 lead.
McBride wasn’t the only Lehigh hitter with a hot bat Monday. Second baseman Mike Sandonato went 3-for-4 at the dish. Bet and freshman third baseman Matt Reitz also added two hits in the win. In all, Lehigh collected 14 hits on the day.
Ercolano stole a base and scored three times for the Mountain Hawks.
On the mound, Marr allowed just two runs over five innings to get the win. Marr (1-4) struck out a season-high seven on the day. Junior Joel Hockman allowed only one hit and struck out three over the game’s final four innings to notch his first save.
