Villanova proves to be too much for Lehigh

Making his first start in three weeks, Lehigh senior left-hander Adam Marr held the Wildcats’ bats in check, allowing only one earned run in 5 and two-thirds innings pitched. Marr (0-4), however, suffered the loss as the Mountain Hawks were unable to dent the scoreboard.
Villanova picked up two unearned runs in the top of the second, thanks in large part to a rare dropped fly ball by the usually sure-handed Joe Ercolano.
Leading by a 3-0 score heading into the seventh, Villanova put the came out of reach, scoring eight runs off the LU bullpen in the final three innings. That stretch included two two-run homers for first baseman Jeremy Hunt (9). In the eighth inning, catcher Jim Gillin added his second of the season.
Lehigh was limited to just five hits on the day, including singles from freshmen Matt Reitz, Geoff Campbell, and Mark Bernhard. Villanova’s Ryan Wendler (2-2) struck out eight in seven innings of work to pick up the win.
The Mountain Hawks resume Patriot League play on Saturday, as Lehigh visits first place Navy for a crucial four-game league series. The teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, beginning each day at noon. Saturday’s twinbill is tentatively scheduled to be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at Lehighsports.com.
