CLEARWATER, Fla. – Lehigh came up on the short end of a pair of slugfests to Ohio State on Friday afternoon.  The Buckeyes topped the Mountain Hawks 17-10 in the first game, and then 13-6 in game two at Jack Russell Stadium.  Ohio State ripped 38 total hits on the day, in improving its record to 4-4 on the season.  Lehigh, now 5-7 overall, has lost five straight.

Game one was one in which Lehigh never led.  After tying the score at 3-3 in the top of the third, the Buckeyes exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-3 lead.  Senior Kyle Collina (1-1) took the loss after pitching the game’s first three innings.

First baseman Andrew Smith and center fielder Joe Ercolano registered three hits apiece for Lehigh in the game.  As a team, the Mountain Hawks had 15 hits in a losing effort.  Smith drove in five runs, and catcher Matt McBride drove in two.  McBride also produced the game’s only home run.

Smith kept up the hot bat in the second game, as he hit his first home run of the season – a solo shot – in the nightcap.  McBride added three more hits in game two, but it wasn’t enough as Ohio State scored 13 runs in the win.

Lehigh sophomore Joe Matteo (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings on the mound for the Mountain Hawks, issuing six walks.

Over the last three games, the Mountain Hawks have allowed 44 runs.

Lehigh wraps up its stay in Florida with an exhibition contest against the Philadelphia Phillies organization.  Action gets underway at 1:00 pm at Carpenter Field in Clearwater.  Lehigh returns home Saturday night, and visits Temple on Tuesday.
