BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the season opener just one week away, Lehigh head coach Liz Ota has announced the schedule for the 2006 campaign.  The Mountain Hawks are faced with a challenging slate, which includes matchups with nationally ranked Notre Dame, as well as regional foe Drexel and perennial Patriot League powers Colgate and American.

“We added Drexel, which is a very tough team and should help prepare us to take on Notre Dame.  The early portion of our schedule will give us a great sense of where we are,” explains Ota.  She adds, “We’re opening at Fairfield, who we had a successful showing against last season, but I feel as though they will be very much improved this year.”

Lehigh opens its season on Wednesday, February 22 in Fairfield, Conn. vs. the Stags of Farifield.  The Mountain Hawks will begin the home portion of their schedule on Friday, March 3 when they welcome the Drexel Dragons to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The first full week of March will provide the Brown and White with a difficult pair of games, as Lehigh will fly west to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, who are ranked 17th in the preseason poll for a contest on March 8.

“We felt as though this year in particular, that this group (of girls) could handle the very big challenge (of playing Notre Dame),” explains Ota.  “That game should prepare us, both mentally and physically, so we are ready for American, who we play later in the week.”

Ota continues, “Road trips are when the team has a chance to bond and become closer as a unit.  That will be a very busy week for us, because we will practice at Notre Dame, play our game and then head straight to American, so it’s a great chance for the girls to be together for a long stretch.”

The Mountain Hawks will make their way to Washington, D.C. for their Patriot League opener, taking on the Eagles of American on Saturday, March 11.  Lehigh returns home on March 15 to take on Monmouth and then heads to Philadelphia for a match up with St. Joe’s two days later.

On Sunday, March 19, the Mountain Hawks begin a five-game homestand, taking on league foes Holy Cross and Villanova, in addition to Longwood, Davidson and Sacred Heart.  On April 8, the Brown and White will embark on a four-game road swing, beginning in Hamilton, New York vs. the reigning Patriot League Champion, Colgate Raiders.  Dates with La Salle, Bucknell and Columbia also appear on the road.  On April 22, Lehigh will play its final game of the regular season, welcoming archrival Lafayette to the Ulrich Sports Complex for a 7:00 showdown.

Lafayette is one team that Ota says could surprise teams this year, especially after the Leopards were selected to finish seventh in the preseason poll, announced on Tuesday.  Lafayette is a much better team than what it was selected to finish, and will be a very tough game for us, particularly in the season finale.”

Ota continues, “Generally we (Lehigh) are satisfied with where we were picked (fourth); it makes sense after where we finished in 2005.  The poll was obviously reflective of the standings from a year ago.”  She goes on to say, “We have full intentions of being back in the tournament this season and would like to perform at a higher level.  It won’t be easy though, as Colgate brings back everyone from last year, Holy Cross has an outstanding goalie to work with and American is always tough.  The league is very strong, which is good, and will make us work that much harder.”
