BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior quarterback Sedale Threatt ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Mountain Hawks improved to 2-0 in the Patriot League with a 38-7 win over Bucknell in front of 10,673 on Alumni Day at Goodman Stadium. Senior tailback Marques Thompson gained a career-high 126 yards on the ground and added a touchdown for the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 3-4 overall with the win. Bucknell falls to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in the league with the loss.

Bucknell took the opening kickoff and put together a solid drive before the Lehigh defense stuffed the Bison on fourth down to take over for the first time all afternoon.  The Mountain Hawks would march right down the field and get on the scoreboard first when Threatt scored on a one-yard run to make it a 7-0 game with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Lehigh would get the ball right back on a fumble recovery by Tim Diamond, which set the Mountain Hawks up deep in Bison territory, which is how the quarter would end.

Lehigh opened the second quarter with another score, as Threatt ran in his second touchdown of the afternoon, this one coming from four-yards out, and with 13:14 remaining in the half, the Mountain Hawks were in front 14-0.  Jason Leo would add a 25-yard field goal to put the home team in front 17-0 with just 2:37 left, but Bucknell refused to end the half quietly.  The Bison took the ball and drove 90 yards in 14 plays and scored their only touchdown of the half when Marecello Trigg hit a wide open Richard Simpson on a 22-yard pass to make the score 17-7 Lehigh at halftime.

The Mountain Hawks gained 17 first downs in the opening 30 minutes to the Bison’s seven and out gained their opponent 184-178 in total yards.  Threatt finished with 60 yards passing, while Marques Thompson carried nine times for 68 yards and Matt McGowan added 34 yards on the ground.  Bucknell was led in rushing by Josh DeStefano’s 42 yards, while Trigg added 31 yards on the ground, 68 through the air and one score.  Both teams converted on six of eight third down conversions, with Lehigh going one of one on fourth down attempts.

Coming out of the locker room, the Mountain Hawks put together an impressive drive which covered 70 yards on 7 plays and ended on a touchdown by Thompson as he dove across the goal line to put Lehigh up 24-7 early in the third.  Later in the quarter, a Bucknell penalty on an attempted Lehigh punt kept a Mountain Hawk drive alive, and Threatt threw his second touchdown pass of the quarter, this one going for six yards to sophomore Sekou Yansane, making the score 31-7 with just 24 ticks left in the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, senior Brannan Thomas gave Lehigh the ball back when he intercepted a Trigg pass and returned it to the Bison 29 yard line. On the very next play, Threatt connected with sophomore Mike Fitzgerald on a touchdown pass to put the Brown and White up by 31.

Threatt finished a very efficient 14-of-19 passing for 126 yards and added 35 yards on the ground. Thompson rushed 16 times for 126 yards, surpassing his previous career high set in Lehigh’s victory over Georgetown two weeks ago. Yansane was Lehigh’s leading receiver on the afternoon, catching five passes for 36 yards.

Lehigh returns to action next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross at Fitton Field.  Kick off is set for just after 1:00 and the game will be televised live on WFMZ, Channel 69, as well as Fox College Sports Atlantic and lehighsports.com.  Steve Degler and Mike Yadush ’93 will provide the commentary.  As always, the game will also be carried live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM, along with lehighsports.com.  Veteran Matt Kerr and former Lehigh wide receiver Kody Fedorcha ’00 will call the action.

EXTRA POINTS … Lehigh honored two of its former Patriot League Championship teams at halftime, including the 1995 and 2001 teams.  The 2001 squad also went onto to capture the seventh Lambert Cup in school history … The Mountain Hawks’ 38 points were a season-high and the most since Lehigh scored 40 in a win at Fordham on November 12, 2005… the win was Lehigh’s first at home since a 46-14 triumph over Georgetown on November 5, 2005, a span of five games.
