Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh senior Barrie Cominsky was named the Patriot League’s 2005 Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year on Friday, as voted on by the league’s sports information directors. Cominsky, a behavioral neuroscience major, maintained a grade point average of 3.79 at Lehigh, and is a multi-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Dean’s List. Cominsky was just as impressive on the field throughout her career, earning three selections to the All-Patriot League teams, including two First-Team choices.
Cominsky started all 17 games for the Mountain Hawks in 2005, registering 37 goals, nine assists and 46 points, as she helped lead Lehigh into the Patriot League Tournament. The Florida native totaled 60 shots on goal, scooped up 50 ground balls, caused 36 turnovers and won 28 draw controls. Cominsky, who was a 2005 First-Team All-League performer, was fifth in the Patriot League in goals, sixth in points, second in ground balls, fourth in draw controls and second in caused turnovers. She also ranked eighth in all of America in caused turnovers and was the recipient of the women’s lacrosse team Athlete of the Year Award.
A 2004 First-Team All-League selection, and a 2003 Second-Team choice, Cominsky led the league in ground balls with 58 and ground balls per game (4.14) as a sophomore. She was also second in caused turnovers per game at 2.21 in 2003. She ended her career with 96 goals, 29 assists, 125 points and 182 ground balls.
Off of the field, Cominsky is a member of Phi Eta Sigma national honor society, as well as a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and she served as captain for the Brown and White in 2005. Cominsky was the recipient of the 2005 David Hellekjaer Memorial Award and she plans to attend Arcadia University next year to earn a doctorate of Physical Therapy. Cominsky is the first Lehigh player to be selected as the women’s lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year since Elizabeth Brodbeck was honored as such in 1998. Jill Altshuler was named the winner in both 1995 and 1996.
