Lehigh comes up just short in Patriot League semi-finals

4/30/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

Hamilton, NY – Lehigh fell behind early to Colgate on Saturday afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks never let up, cutting the lead to three in the final minutes, before finally falling to the Raiders 12-9 in the 2005 Patriot League Tournament semi-finals.  As they have done all season long, Barrie Cominsky and Amy Chamberlain led the Brown and White on offense, as Cominsky scored four goals, and Chamberlain added two scores and two assists.  With the loss, the Mountain Hawks conclude their season with a record of 7-10, while the top-seeded Raiders move onto Sunday’s Patriot League Championship game.

Kelly Winning and Tara Casey put Colgate in front 2-0, before Cominsky scored Lehigh’s first goal at the 17:00 mark of the opening half off of an assist from Chamberlain.  The Raiders then scored two more goals in the next five minutes to move in front 4-1, but Lehigh came back on the strength of goals by Cominksy and Vienna Pharaon to close the gap to just one at 4-3 with 8:14 to go in the half.

Winning added her second goal of the contest with 5:54 left in the half, and Tara Casey tacked on the Raiders sixth goal of the opening 30 minutes, to put Colgate ahead 6-3, but Cominsky found the back of the net for the third time in the first half with just eight seconds remaining, and Lehigh went to the locker room trailing by just two, at 6-4.

Casey opened the second half with her second goal just 30 seconds in and the Raiders quickly went back up by three at 7-4.  Freshman Christy Smith then scored at the 25:46 mark to bring the Mountain Hawks to within two.  But Colgate kept Lehigh at bay, scoring the game’s next two goals and the home team was in front 9-4.  Chamberlain and Cominsky then scored back-to-back goals in a span of 1:29 and the Mountain Hawks had new life, down just 9-6.  Colgate answered with three more scores of its own, and with 10:01 left, the Raiders were in front 12-6.  But with ten minutes remaining, the Brown and White had plenty of time to stage and a comeback and that’s just what head coach Liz Ota’s team did.

Lissy King scored with just under five to go on as assist from Pharaon and Chamberlain followed that up one minute later to bring the Mountain Hawks to within three.  King then had another opportunity to make it a two-goal affair, but her shot hit the side of the net, and from there Colgate simply ran the clock out.

Lehigh was out shot 33-28 on the day and had 28 ground balls to Colgate’s 31.  The Mountain Hawks turned the ball over 18 times, but did force 20 Raider turnovers.  Freshman Brittany Besler was again solid in goal as she faced 33 shots and recorded nine saves on the afternoon.  Kristen Sherry, King, Eileen Miller and Cominsky all scooped up four ground balls for Lehigh, while Cominsky caused two turnovers and led the Brown and White with six shots.

Despite the loss, Ota was upbeat.  "We had a couple of moments there where we could not get to loose balls, where they (Colgate) beat us in a few draw controls and we had trouble finding a rhythm.  But we were in a good position down the stretch and I'm happy with the way we competed today."  Ota continued, "We played Colgate earlier this season and lost by a larger margin, but today I think we came ready to play and we showed it."

Ota then commented on the play of Cominsky.  "Barrie had one of her best games today.  I think she realized that it could be her last game and she really took over out there.  Her intensity level was fantastic and it was very contagious.  She was just brilliant for us today."
