Mountain Hawks earn doubleheader split at UMES

3/31/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Princess Anne, MD – The Mountain Hawks returned to the diamond on Thursday, and Lehigh earned a doubleheader split at Maryland-Eastern Shore in its final tune-up before the start of Patriot League play.  Lehigh downed UMES 3-0 in game one, but the Fighting Hawks blanked Lehigh 4-0 in the nightcap.  The Mountain Hawks return to Bethlehem with a 10-9-1 overall record.  With the split, Eastern Shore improves to 4-21 on the season.

In game one, freshman William Alec was dominant on the hill for the Mountain Hawks.  He blanked UMES over the game’s first five innings, allowing just two hits, to earn his first win of the season (1-0). Alec struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Meanwhile, freshman center fielder Joe Ercolano led off the game with a triple and scored on a John Zaszewski sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0 in favor of Lehigh.  In the fourth, first baseman Forrest Doane jacked a solo home run to left center field, his fourth homer of the season, to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage.  Catcher Matt McBride recorded a sac fly in the fifth to put the Mountain Hawks on top, 3-0.

After Alec’s stellar outing on the mound, junior Kyle Collina shut down UMES over the final two innings, striking out four, en route to his first save of 2005.

Game two was a similar story, with the opposite outcome.  This time, it was Eastern Shore pitching that held the Lehigh bats in check.  The Mountain Hawks recorded just five hits and could not dent the scoreboard as the Fighting Hawks salvaged the doubleheader split.

Lehigh starter Jed Davitt surrendered three runs in two and two-thirds innings to suffer the loss.  His record now stands at 0-1 in 2005.

Lehigh shortstop Liam O’Connor was 3-for-3 at the plate in game two in a losing effort.

The Mountain Hawks return to action this weekend, as Lehigh hosts Army to begin Patriot League play.  The four-game series was set to begin with a doubleheader, but Saturday’s action has already been postponed due to threatening weather.  The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will play two on Sunday, weather permitting, and two more on Monday to complete the series.  Action is set to get underway at Noon EDT each day.
