Mountain Hawks down Temple in LBC opener

3/15/2005 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Ambler, PA – Three Lehigh pitchers combined to hold the Temple offense in check as the Mountain Hawks topped the Owls by a 3-2 score at Ambler Field in the first round of the 2005 Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday afternoon.  The victory improves the Mountain Hawks’ record to 5-4 on the season, while the setback drops the Owls to 4-6 in 2005.

“I thought our [three pitchers] all had a great outing,” said Lehigh head coach Sean Leary after the win.  “They all made pitches when they needed to and showed us some good things on the mound.”

Jack Muscalus got things started on the hill, holding Temple to just a run on two hits over the game’s first four innings.  Kyle Collina (1-2) came on in the fifth, and struck out four over the next three innings to earn the win.  With a one-run lead, Joel Hockman shut down the Owls’ offense over the final two frames to earn his first save.

Offensively for Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks scored all three runs in the fifth.  John Zaszewski singled home a run to get Lehigh on the board, and then Forrest Doane drove home two more with a single of his own – including the game-winning tally.

Zaszewski and Mike Sandonato each registered two hits in the Mountain Hawks win.

The victory propels Lehigh into the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic, where the Mountain Hawks will take on the winner of the Delaware-La Salle showdown on March 28.

Meanwhile, Lehigh next returns to the diamond on Thursday, when the Mountain Hawks visit Haverford.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from Haverford, Pa.
