BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh recently completed its fall season, in which the Mountain Hawks focused on improving their speed, strength and conditioning, while welcoming the newest members of the program to Division-I lacrosse.  Head Coach Liz Ota, set to enter her second season, describes what Lehigh hoped to accomplish during the fall workout period.  “We worked out for six weeks during our fall season, with a heavy emphasis on weight training, speed work, conditioning and skill development.  We had four competition dates, beginning with the alumni game and then three mini-tournaments which included scrimmages against Monmouth, LaSalle, Lafayette, Longwood and Delaware.”

The annual alumnae game was a worthwhile event in terms of competition and also as an event to reconnect with lacrosse alumnae.  Ota and associate head coach Jill Redfern are working hard to establish a solid connection between current Mountain Hawks and alumni from years past.  “We had a nice group of alums (most from the 1990’s) return to Lehigh and compete against our current players.  Our efforts focused on establishing a winning tradition in women’s lacrosse and generating involvement from lacrosse alumnae – an integral component of our future success.

“The tournament provided us with a great opportunity to gain full-field playing experience with our new group and it was particularly important for the freshmen.  We are fortunate to have several talented and experienced upperclassmen on the team this year, and the freshmen class is very talented as a whole.  The fall really helped the newcomers; I think they began to realize that they can really contribute and they were afforded time before our spring season to adjust to the demands of Division-I lacrosse.”

What will Ota, Redfern and the Mountain Hawks now do, as they head into the winter?  “Given what we’ve seen throughout the fall, Jill and I will make a few changes; we will likely make some minor adjustments in strategy and continue to refine our game plan.  In addition, we plan to continue with our individual workouts, focused on strength, conditioning and skill development.  We are really focusing on the fundamentals, trying to perfect our stick skills, shooting, etc.  I think we accomplished a lot in the short time we were together in the fall, and we are looking forward to the end of January when we get together and begin preparations for the season.”

Lehigh opens its 2006 season on Monday, March 6, when the Mountain Hawks travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on the Stags.  Game time is set for 3:30.
