Easton, PA – Senior Jessica DePalo scored 26 points as the Mountain Hawks overcame some shooting and turnover woes to win their second straight Patriot League game, 58-48 over archrival Lafayette Wednesday evening at the Kirby Sports Center. With the win Lehigh improves to 10-4 on the year, 2-0 in the Patriot League, the team’s best start ever in the Sue Troyan era. The Leopards fall to 2-12, 0-2 in the League.

Lehigh jumped out to an early lead as DePalo scored six of the Mountain Hawks first eight points. The Mountain Hawk defense held the Leopards to just 6-of-24 shooting in the first 20 minutes as the Brown and White took a 25-15 lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, the Mountain Hawks built their advantage to 17 points, before Lafayette began chipping away. The Leopards would whittle the Lehigh lead down to seven with under two minutes to play, but the Mountain Hawks sealed the game with some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. Senior Carli Toliver went six for six from the charity stripe as the Mountain Hawks reached the double digit win mark on the season.

DePalo led all scorers with 26; she was the only Mountain Hawk in double figures. Toliver finished with nine points while Sara Ellis chipped in with eight. Mary Frances Hynoski only scored four, but the senior helped out in other ways, tying career highs with 13 rebounds and seven assists. Hynoski also tied a season high with four thefts. Adrienne Blount contributed a season best seven boards as Lehigh out-rebounded Lafayette by a 38-30 margin.

“We expected Lafayette to give us a challenge tonight and that’s what they did,” said head coach Sue Troyan, who has now won nine of ten games against the Leopards. “On a night when our shots weren’t falling it was important for our defense to step up and play well and I thought our effort was where it needed to be.”

Lehigh shot just 39 percent on the night and turned the ball over 21 times, but the Mountain Hawks also forced 21 turnovers and held the Leopards to 35 percent shooting. Vanessa VanDeVenter led Lafayette with 14.

The Mountain Hawks will try to make it 3-for-3 in the Patriot League when they host Navy at 7:00 on Saturday night. Tickets can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, online at lehighsports.com or by visiting the Stabler Arena box office on game day.
