Lehigh drops a tough 3-2 decision to Monmouth

9/15/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

West Long Branch, NJ – Lehigh dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon in a game that saw the Mountain Hawks fall behind and then mount a serious comeback only to fall short in the end.  The loss snaps Lehigh’s three game winning streak and drops the Brown and White to 3-4 on the season, while Monmouth improves to 4-4 on the year.

Monmouth jumped in front of the Mountain Hawks right from the get-go, as Susan Ganghamer found the back of the net just 1:18 into the contest to put the Hawks in front 1-0.  Kelly Balady then snuck one into the net off of a feed from Kelly Balady at the 2:52 mark and Lehigh was down 2-0 with less than three minutes gone.  The Mountain Hawks would not quit however and kept pushing until they were all the way back.

Junior Marissa Iannarone scored off of a pass from Christine Smith at the 37:42 mark and the Monmouth lead was down to one.  Melissa Fricke then found the back of the net off of a feed from Kristi Miller and with 15 minutes remaining, the Mountain Hawks had tied the game at two.

Balady would leave Lehigh with a bitter taste in its mouth however, as she scored with no time remaining on the clock to send the Mountain Hawks home unhappy.  Lehigh played well following the opening minutes and hung tough all afternoon.

Monmouth got off 15 shots on the day, while Lehigh had 11.  Monmouth had 11 penalty corners to Lehigh’s six.  In goal for Lehigh, senior Jeanine Hoff saw her scoreless streak end at over 140 minutes, but she still was able to stop three shots on the day, while junior Meghan Gove came in for the second half and sent back six Monmouth shots.  Monmouth’s goalie Carrie Colbert saved five shots on the day.

Despite the loss head coach Julie Mazer was pleased with the way her team responded after a rough start.  “We fell behind in the beginning, but once we started to play our game, we were right there with Monmouth.  Christine Smith single handedly kept us in the game today; she brought us back when we were down.”  Mazer continues, “Kristi Miller also played very well for us.  We just needed a better start to the game today.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks play host to Columbia at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 and all of the action can be heard live on Lehigh’s website at lehighsports.com.
