Clabby's two goals lead Lehigh past Columbia in OT

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh evened its record at 4-4 on Saturday with an exciting 2-1 overtime win over the Columbia Lions at the Ulrich Sports Complex. After allowing Columbia to tie the game in the second half, the Mountain Hawks dominated the action in overtime and had a number of good chances before senior forward Sheila Clabby scored her second goal of the day to end it.

Lehigh got on the board when Clabby tallied the first of her two unassisted scores after a scramble in front of the net in the game’s 23rd minute. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gove went the distance and made eight saves for the win.

“We came out strong at the beginning,” said coach Julie Mazer. “We were able to regroup and raise our level of play.”

Columbia came out of halftime fired up and scored less than four minutes after the break. The tying goal came after senior Tracy Bucholski took a penalty corner and got a nifty return pass from junior Erin Wesseldine for a point-blank chance. Only minutes later, Columbia ran the play again only to have Gove come over to make an outstanding save. Columbia controlled most of the second half action and took nine shots in the period, but was unable to score again.

Columbia didn’t give up, but we didn’t get rattled,” Mazer said.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks play host to Sacred Heart at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
