Lehigh splits league DH with Holy Cross

In the opening contest, Lehigh’s offense ripped nine singles in the seven inning affair, as the Mountain Hawks plated single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. The three runs proved to be enough for Lehigh ace Jack Muscalus (5-2). He went the distance for his third complete game of the season, striking out four Crusaders in the process.
Offensively, catcher Matt McBride and shortstop Steve Salemme each recorded two hits in the win. Lehigh was the beneficiary of five Crusaders walks and two fielding errors, but the Mountain Hawks had to settle for just the three runs, stranding nine runners on base.
In game two, the Crusaders (5-15-1) scored three times in the fourth and added two more in the top half of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead on Lehigh starter Karl Weimer (2-1). Trailing by five in the home half of the sixth, Lehigh rallied to make things interesting. After John Zaszewski led off the inning with a walk, Jesse Novalis laced a single to left. With two aboard, catcher Matt McBride ripped a double down the left field line plating Zaszewski. Forrest Doane then belted a long drive to left, plating Novalis on a sac fly to cut the deficit to 5-2. An Andrew Smith groundout scored McBride, making the score 5-3.
Doane added his team-leading fifth home run of the season – a solo blast to right – in the bottom of the eighth to trim the Crusaders’ lead to one, but Lehigh could get no closer.
Doane drove in two in the game to lead Lehigh, while Salemme and Jeff Baker each had two hits in the loss.
