Bats quiet, then explode in a Monday two-game split

Bradenton, FL – Lehigh split a pair of games during the second day of their Spring Break trip to Florida.  Though the games were played back-to-back, the outcomes were night and day.  The first game saw a pitcher’s duel, as Lehigh won a close 2-1 decision over IPFW. In the second game, the bats came alive for both teams, but the Mountain Hawks ended up on the wrong side of a 10-8 score against Valparaiso.

Jack Muscalus pitched seven strong innings to gain his third victory of the year in the first game, giving up seven hits and only one run while striking out four. Jesse Novalis had two hits in the game, and Eric Hoffman and Steve Salemme each drove in a run in a two-run fifth that gave the Mountain Hawks the lead for good. Kyle Collina gave up just one hit in two innings of relief to earn his second save on the season.

In the second game, Lehigh matched Valpo nearly run for run, but just didn’t get enough defense before falling in the end.  The Mountain Hawks pounded out eight runs on thirteen hits, but Lehigh pitchers allowed 10 runs on 16 hits.  The defense also made four errors in the losing cause.

Matt Mezzancello took the loss for Lehigh, as he gave up the winning runs in the seventh.  Mezzancello pitched three innings, giving up three runs on five hits.

Four Lehigh hitters had multiple-hit games, led by John Zaszewski who was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Forrest Doane cracked a two-run homer, and Jeff Baker clouted a circuit-trip in the loss as well.

The Mountain Hawks return to the diamond on Tuesday with a 2:30 game against Eastern Kentucky.
