Seeing double, Army tops Lehigh 6-3 twice

West Point, NY – While the end result was the same, the paths taken were quite different.  Lehigh dropped a pair of games at Army by a 6-3 score on Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field.  The Mountain Hawks return to Bethlehem with a record of 12-10 overall and 1-3 in Patriot League play, while the Black Knights improve to 13-9 overall and 3-1 in the league.

In the first game, Lehigh built a 2-0 lead in the third, and padded the lead with a run in the top of the fourth to take a three-run cushion into the bottom of the fourth inning.  Army’s bats awoke, and the Black Knights posted six unanswered runs off Lehigh starter Adam Marr (2-2) over the next two innings.  Army second baseman Nate Stone’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference, putting the Cadets ahead for good.

Offensively in the opener, Lehigh shortstop Eric Hoffman and second baseman Steve Salemme registered two hits apiece in the losing effort.

Although the conclusion was the same, game two was a different story.  The Black Knights jumped on Lehigh starter Joel Hockman and built a six-run lead.  Army, up 6-0 after six innings, did surrender three late inning runs to the Mountain Hawks in a desperate comeback attempt.  Eric Hoffman laced two doubles and drove in a run in the second game, while Jesse Novalis and Forrest Doane each ripped a double for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks continue their season on Tuesday, as Lehigh visits St. Joseph’s in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic.  Game time is scheduled for 3:00 from the Hawks’ Philadelphia campus, and the game will be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at lehighsports.com with Micah Hart delivering the action.
