Hoffman helps Lehigh rally past St. Joe's in LBC

Norristown, PA – Senior shortstop Eric Hoffman smacked a bases-clearing, three-run double down the left field line in the top of the ninth as the Mountain Hawks rallied to top host St. Joseph’s by a 5-3 score on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic played at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.  The win propels Lehigh into the tournament’s semifinal round, where the Mountain Hawks will square off against rival Lafayette.

West Chester native Ryan Dodds got the ball for Lehigh, and pitched very well over seven innings of work.  Dodds left the game with a no-decision.

Trailing 3-2 in their final at-bat, the Mountain Hawks (13-10) rallied to load the bases for the leadoff hitter, Hoffman, who pushed his team out in front with yet another clutch hit.  This time, his dramatic double came with a full count and the bases juiced to give the Mountain Hawks the lead.

Junior Kyle Stawicki (2-0) battled out of trouble in the ninth to give the Mountain Hawks the victory.  The Lehigh win snaps a three-game Lehigh slide.

St. Joseph’s falls to 4-24 on the season with the heartbreaking loss.

With the victory, the Mountain Hawks advance in the Liberty Bell Classic to meet Lafayette at a date and site to be determined.  The winner of that contest will move on to the LBC final to be played on April 28 at the new Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Lehigh is scheduled to return to the diamond once again on Wednesday, when Lehigh hosts Delaware State.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 from Goodman Field.
