Lehigh uses offensive explosion to double up N. Illinois

3/11/2004 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Bradenton, FL – Lehigh’s bats remained hot and the Mountain Hawks got back on the winning track with an 18-9 thumping of Northern Illinois on Thursday morning at the Baseball Academy.  The win improves Lehigh’s record to 9-6 on the season, while the setback drops the Huskies to 7-5 in 2004.

Trailing by a run in the top of the second inning, the Huskies posted a three-spot to take a 3-1 lead over Lehigh.  However, that advantage was short-lived as the Mountain Hawks plated four runs in the home half of the third to take a 5-3 lead.

Center fielder Dan Russell led Lehigh’s offensive charge with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate, including a double and two runs scored.  Seniors Eric Hoffman and Jesse Novalis also contributed to the outburst, lacing three hits apiece in the win.  Two of Hoffman’s hits were doubles.  First baseman Forrest Doane had a pair of hits, and drove in four.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, March 12 when the Mountain Hawks take on Northern Iowa in their final game at the Baseball Academy in Bradenton.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
