Offense clicks in win over Manhattan

Bethlehem, PA – The Mountain Hawks got the Jim Shreve era off to a good start, beating Manhattan in the season opener 17-10 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Lehigh scored two goals sixteen seconds apart in the first two minutes of the game, and never trailed from that point on.

Lehigh would take a 3-0 lead on a goal by Barrie Cominsky eight minutes into the game, and it looked like the game might turn into a rout.  But Manhattan would come back, scoring three unanswered to tie it up at 3-3.  However, the Mountain Hawks caught fire again, scoring four unanswered of their own to lead 7-3 at the half.

A couple of goals off free position shots got the Jaspers back within 7-6, but again the Mountain Hawk attack was too much for them to handle. Lehigh scored 10 goals in the second period, many as a result of some nifty passing amongst the players. In total, 9 of the 17 goals were assisted on.

Manhattan would pull within 11-9 with 14:50 left to play, but Lehigh would score six of the last seven goals in the game to put the victory on the board.

Lehigh head coach Jim Shreve was pleased with the team’s effort the first time out. “We had a good start,” said Shreve. “We came in wanting to focus on ground balls and possession, and I thought we did a good job of that. There was a little lapse to start the second half, but then our senior leadership really stepped up and put the game out of reach.”

Ella Studdiford led the Mountain Hawks with four goals in the game to go along with 2 assists. Cominsky added three goals as well, and indeed seven different Lehigh players found the net on the afternoon.  Victoria Carman led Manhattan (0-1) with four goals on the day.

The Mountain Hawks (1-0) return to action on Tuesday, March 2, as they travel to take on Mount Saint Mary’s.  Game time is set for 3:30pm.
