2/25/2004 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Glen Burnie, MD – Lehigh pounded out 22 hits as the Mountain Hawks moved to 4-0 on the season with a convincing 19-5 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday.  Seniors Jesse Novalis and Eric Hoffman each belted their first home runs of the season in the rout.

The middle of the Lehigh lineup again proved to be quite potent, as the trio of Hoffman, Novalis, and freshman catcher Matt McBride combined to go 9-for-16 at the plate on the day.  Hoffman (2-for-4) scored five runs to lead the Mountain Hawks.  Novalis (5-for-7) drove in five runs while scoring four times himself, including his first blast of the season to straightaway center field.  McBride also chased home four runs in the victory.

Other offensive stars for Lehigh included first baseman Forrest Doane, who was 3-for-5, while designated hitter Dan Russell collected a pair of hits on the afternoon.

On the mound, junior Jack Muscalus (2-0) worked five innings to secure his second win of the season.  Joel Hockman (two innings), Matt Mezzancello (one inning), and Kyle Collina (one inning) all saw time out of the bullpen as well.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action Friday, as they head back to the Old Line State to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore in a doubleheader.
