Worcester, MA – Lehigh clinched its first ever appearance in the Patriot League Tournament with an 11-10 victory over Holy Cross on Monday afternoon. The win raises the Mountain Hawks’ record to 10-3 overall and 3-3 in the league, while the Crusaders fall to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in league action.
Lehigh fell behind 3-0 in the game’s first six minutes and trailed 5-3 at the half. After Holy Cross scored the first goal of the second half, junior Emily Studdiford started a 7-0 Mountain Hawk run with her final two goals of the game. Classmate Meredith Carso scored both of her goals during the stretch. At the 7:08 mark of the game, the Crusaders broke the run and started a late surge, scoring four of the game’s last five goals. Lehigh would hold Holy Cross off and advance to the postseason with the 11-10 win.
Studdiford and sophomore Kellan Van Hoesen each scored three times on the day and Carso added a pair of goals and two assists for four points. Senior Rosie Sherry, along with sophomores Jen Fleming and Barrie Cominsky also scored goals in the win.
Juniors Rebecca Morley and Sue Schoelle turned in big days as well. Morley recovered eight ground balls and forced three turnovers, while Schoelle added six ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Begina stopped 11 Crusader shots in the victory.
Lehigh’s tenth win of the season is the most since the Mountain Hawks won 14 games during the 1998 campaign. The program had failed to qualify for the postseason league tournament in the championship’s two years of existence.
For the Crusaders, Heather Bryce scored three goals, including two in the final 2:23 of the contest, and added an assist. Erin Rowse and Katie Britt each scored two goals and helped on two others. Rowse and Susan Roth recovered five ground balls apiece and Kellaigh Malangone stopped ten shots in cage.
In the league tournament, fourth seeded Lehigh will face the host school and top seed American on Saturday. Game time is set for 12:00 and the game can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
