Philadelphia, PA – Lehigh won its fourth straight game and doubled its 2002 win total with a 13-11 victory over Villanova on Wednesday afternoon. The win raised the Mountain Hawks record to 8-2 on the season and 1-2 in Patriot League play.
Lehigh fell behind early, 3-0, before battling back to tie the score at 4-4, behind a pair of scores from junior Meredith Carso. The Wildcats would retake the lead briefly as the teams traded three goal runs to end the half knotted at 7-7.
Villanova again took the lead, going up 9-8 in the opening minutes of the second half before Lehigh went on a 5-2 game-closing run. A goal by junior Emily Studdiford broke the 9-9 deadlock with 4:01 left and gave the Mountain Hawks the lead for good. Carso would add her fourth and fifth goals of the day and sophomore Barrie Cominsky added her second as Lehigh built a three-goal cushion.
Carso ended the afternoon with her second five-goal day of the season. Studdiford had three goals, including the game-tying and game-winning scores. Cominsky and sophomore Kellan Van Hoesen also scored multiple goals in the win.
Van Hoesen also led the team with nine draw controls. Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Begina made six saves in the win.
"This was a great win for us," head coach Judy Baxter said. "It was our first league win and we played with a lot of emotion and intensity. We got off to slow start, but we knew what was at stake and battled back."
Four Wildcats scored two goals on the game, Bess Hanley, Katie Mannix, Meghan Carolan, and Elizabeth Firth. Carolan led all players with seven ground balls. In goal, Jess McGrattan made eight saves.
The win was Lehigh’s eighth on the season. That is the most wins for the Mountain Hawks since an 8-4 record in 1998.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday in a Patriot League contest at rival Lafayette. Game time is set for 7:00.
