Fairfield, CT – Junior Meredith Carso scored a career high five goals as Lehigh (5-2, 0-2 Patriot League) snapped a two game losing streak, defeating Sacred Heart (3-3, 0-0 Northeast) 9-8 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Mountain Hawks picked up their fifth win, one more than during the entire 2002 season.
Lehigh scored four of the game's first five goals, including back-to-back scores by Carso, to take a 4-1 lead. The Pioneers fought back, tying the score with two goals coming in the last 61 seconds of the first half.
Carso came out firing in the second half, scoring the next two goals in the game to put Lehigh up 6-4. Junior Ella Studdiford then chipped in with her only goal of the afternoon to stretch the lead to three. Sacred Heart came back again, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the score at 7-7. Carso’s final goal and sophomore Barrie Cominsky’s second goal of the game put the game away as another Sacred Heart comeback bid fell short.
Cominsky and Ella Studdiford led the Mountain Hawks with five ground balls each, while senior Rosie Sherry caused three turnovers. Freshman Kyle Begina made ten saves in the win.
"We got off to a quick start, but it was really a back and forth contest," head coach Judy Baxter said. "It was a good comeback after the Bucknell game and our team showed a lot of character. We corrected some things and did very well on draw controls and in midfield transitions."
For the Pioneers, Christina Macchia and Michelle Bruckner scored three goals apiece. Mary Romano and JoAnn Montesarchio both grabbed six ground balls and goalie Amy Lavoie made 13 saves.
The game marked the Mountain Hawks first game away from the friendly confines of the Ulrich Sports Complex, as the season’s first six contests had all been played at home.
Lehigh looks to make it two in a row when the Mountain Hawks travel to Monmouth for a contest on Sunday at 1:00.
