Bethlehem, PA – Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Begina has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 23. In two games during that week, she turned away 27 shots.
Begina tallied the two best saves efforts of her career, 15 in a win over St. Joseph’s and 12 in a last-second loss to American. She played all 132 minutes as both games could not be resolved without overtime. The freshman allowed just five scores in 66:00 against the Hawks. For the week, she allowed 6.83 GAA, while stopping .643 of all shots on goal.
"Kyle has done an outstanding job so far," head coach Judy Baxter said. "She’s very eager and brings a very positive attitude everyday. She has been working very hard all year, and her play has been a key to our start this season."
On the season, Begina has helped the team to a 4-1 start. She has a 5.69 GAA and a save percentage of .637, while holding the opposition to five goals or less four times.
Begina and her Mountain Hawks’ teammates will try to build on their strong start when they host Bucknell on Wednesday in the final game of a six game homestand. Game time at the Ulrich Sports Complex is set for 4:00. The game can be heard live on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu with Jeff Tourial calling the action.
