Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season as American scored a goal with just :04 remaining in overtime. The 10-9 loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 4-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Patriot League, while American moves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Patriot League action.
Lehigh took it to American in the first half, building a 4-1 lead after 30:00 of play, due in large part to a 17-7 advantage in shots and 30-14 edge in groundballs.
The second half was a different story, as the Mountain Hawks surrendered eight second half goals, allowing American to climb back into the contest. Lehigh would give up the lead, when Nadia Harmsen scored with just 2:12 remaining. The Mountain Hawks were not done, however, as sophomore Jen Fleming scored her fourth goal of the game with 0:57 remaining to knot the game at nine.
The game then moved to overtime, where neither team scored until Katy Zaweski beat Lehigh goalkeeper Kyle Begina with only four seconds to play, with an assist from Gina Riitano.
Fleming was Lehigh’s only player to score more than once. Juniors Ella Studdiford, Emily Studdiford, and Suzanne Aronowitz, and sophomores Kellan Van Hoesen, and Sarah Starsoneck each scored one goal in the game.
Begina played the entire 66:00 in cage for the Mountain Hawks, making 12 saves in the loss. Sophomores Kristen Sherry and Barrie Cominsky each caused four turnovers. Sherry picked up eight, Cominsky seven.
"I thought we played very well today," head coach Judy Baxter said. "We were going up against the top team in the Patriot League, and took them right to the wire. It doesn’t get any closer than that."
Scoring two goals for American were Riitano, Moriah Linnell, Nadia Harmsen, and Nicole McCarthy. Rebecca Copeland and Zaweski also picked up goals. Laura Repoli picked up six ground balls, while Linnell and Raina Edelstein each caused five turnovers. Kathleen Finnegan made 16 saves in the victory.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, when Bucknell visits the Ulrich Sports Complex for a 4:00 contest.
