Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (1-0, 0-0 Patriot) will look for a 2-0 start for the second year in a row, when Manhattan (0-0, 0-0 Metro Atlantic) comes to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Thursday for a 4:00 game.
The Mountain Hawks got new head coach Judy Baxter her first win in her first game during her second stint as head coach behind a strong defensive effort against Mount St. Mary’s. Lehigh came away with an 8-4 victory powered by some strong goaltending by freshman Kyle Begina. Begina, making her collegiate debut, surrendered only four goals and stopped 11 Mountaineer shots. The newcomer held the opposition scoreless over the final 45:24 of the game, allowing the Lehigh offense to take command of the game.
Sophomores Barrie Cominsky and Kellan Van Hoesen scored two goals apiece in the victory. Also scoring for the Mountain Hawks were juniors Ella and Emily Studdiford and sophomore Sarah Starsoneck. Junior Meredith Carso scored Lehigh’s fifth goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner.
Thursday’s game will be the season opener for the Jaspers, who finished last season 4-12 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC. The two teams met last season with Lehigh winning 10-7. 2002’s top two scorers return this season. Nora Jacquette led the team with 31 goals scored and her 10 assists are more than any other returning player. Mary Dudek was second only to Jacquette in both goals and points scored last season, with 28 and 35, respectively. The Jaspers goalkeeper is Isy Pananon. Last season, Pananon saw action in just three games, covering 21 minutes.
