Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (1-0) defeated Mount St. Mary’s (0-1) by a final of 8-4 on Tuesday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The win was the Mountain Hawks first under head coach Judy Baxter, and freshman goalie Kyle Begina held the Mountaineers to just four goals in her collegiate debut.
The Mountain Hawks fell behind early 4-3 in the first half. Begina was up to the challenge in her first game, as she and the Lehigh defense would not surrender another score over the final 45:24 of the game. The freshman made 11 saves, while allowing just the four goals.
Sophomores Barrie Cominsky and Kellan Van Hoesen scored two goals apiece to lead the Mountain Hawk offense. After Cominsky tied the game at 4-4 with 15:12 remaining in the first half, neither team scored until only 18:12 remained in the contest. Junior Meredith Carso would knock in the game-winner before the Mountain Hawks added three more goals to put the game away.
"Kyle really stepped up and made a big difference out there today," Baxter observed. "Our defense played well and controlled the game, enabling us to handle the lead. Our girls really hustled and worked hard to get this win."
Leading the Mountaineer attack was Kirby Day, who scored a pair of goals. In net for Mount St. Mary’s, Naomi Campano took the loss, making 11 saves.
Lehigh gets a break on Wednesday before hosting Manhattan on Thursday. The match up with the Jaspers is set for 4:00.
