Former Johns Hopkins All-American John Crawley enters his third season on the Lehigh sidelines in 2022 after being named assistant coach on July 29, 2019. Following graduation from Hopkins in 2017, Crawley went on to coach one season at Notre Dame, then one year at Colgate before coming to Bethlehem. He also has extensive experience playing in the Premier Lacrosse League with Atlas LC.

Serving as offensive coordinator, Crawley has led a Mountain Hawks’ offense that has produced at a prolific level over his first two seasons. In 2021, Lehigh finished ninth nationally in scoring offense (14.08 goals per game). Entering 2022, the Mountain Hawks are ranked in the national polls for a fourth straight season. This comes after a 2021 campaign which saw Lehigh rise as high as No. 5 in the rankings. The Mountain Hawks began the season 9-0, with wins over No. 10 Loyola, No. 7 Army West Point and No. 19 Navy. Lehigh was the second-to-last team in the nation to lose a game in 2021. The Mountain Hawks finished 8-0 in the Patriot League (regular season) before beating Colgate in the semifinals. The championship game was cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 test in Loyola’s tier 1 testing pool, but Lehigh earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament – the second time in three all-time NCAA berths that the Mountain Hawks were seeded.

Crawley has helped mentor a number of offensive players who have put up impressive numbers, including 2021 first team All-Patriot League honorees Tommy Schelling and John Sidorski, and second-team members Andrew Eichelberger and Cole Kirst. In addition, faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger was a first team All-American, finishing the season with an all-time NCAA record win percentage of 79.5 (225-of-283) with a program and Patriot League record 160 groundballs (in 12 games). Eight Mountain Hawks tallied double-figure points, including Schelling (48 points) and Christian Mule’ (45) over 40 and five with 23 or more. Also of note, Sisselberger was named the league’s Faceoff Specialist of the Year, while head coach Kevin Cassese was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Goaltender James Spence and defenseman Anthony Tangredi were also named honorable mention All-Americans by various organizations. Teddy Leggett was named a Senior CLASS Award first team All-American while Conor Gaffney was named an Academic All-American for a fourth time.

Crawley coached a Lehigh offense that averaged 14.0 goals per game (15th nationally) in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Lehigh was off to a 5-1 start (2-0 in Patriot League play), which included scoring 14 or more goals in all five victories. The Mountain Hawks were ranked 19th in the final Maverick Media Poll. Individually, sophomore Tommy Schelling enjoyed a breakout season with 22 goals and 11 assists in just six games, joining Andrew Pettit and Gaffney on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. Pettit returned from injury with 26 points (17 goals, nine assists), including a program-recording eight goals vs. VMI, while freshman Christian Mule’ was strong, tallying 21 points (16 goals, five assists).

Crawley began his coaching career at Notre Dame in 2018, helping the Fighting Irish win the ACC Championship. While there, he worked primarily with the faceoff unit and with players on the offensive side of the field. Crawley then moved onto Colgate in 2019, alongside new Raiders’ coach Matt Karweck who Crawley worked with at Notre Dame. Crawley helped Colgate to a strong start to the season, including a season-opening victory over Syracuse, to help jump into the national rankings.

At Johns Hopkins, Crawley played in all 60 games, starting 30, while posting 70 career goals and 30 assists. Among many highlights, Crawley was a two-time USILA honorable mention All-American. The two-time captain was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team as a sophomore, helping the Blue Jays to the Final Four. As a freshman in 2014, Crawley scored four goals on five shots against Towson to become the first Hopkins midfielder to score four goals in a game since Paul Rabil in 2005. Also strong in the classroom, Crawley was named Academic All-BIG and a BIG Distinguished Scholar in 2017.

Crawley was selected 33rd overall by the Charlotte Hounds in the 2017 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. He impressed from the beginning, posting six goals and an assist in his first MLL game, garnering Player of the Week honors. Now in the PLL, he's tallied three goals and two assists in each of the last two seasons for Atlas LC.
