Â
Jamel Mutunga enters his third season as Lehigh’s running backs coach. In 2015, Mutunga turned an inexperienced stable of runners into a unit of strength for the team. Freshman Dominick Bragalone ran for 1,008 yards and became the first Lehigh freshman to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Bragalone was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year and was a finalist for the FCS Freshman of the Year award.
Â
In addition to Bragalone’s success, freshman Micco Brisker posted Lehigh’s first 100-yard rushing game from a freshman in 15 years. Sophomore Nana Amankwah-Ayeh emerged as a hard-nosed, sure-handed rusher, while junior Mackenzie Crawford was a weapon in pass protection and the receiving game.
Â
In his first season, the Mountain Hawks averaged 167 yards per game on the ground, with his group of runners averaging 116 rushing yards and 18.5 receiving yards per contest. Rich Sodeke emerged in his senior season to lead the Mountain Hawks with 766 rushing yards, including three 100-plus yard rushing days.
Â
Mutunga came to Lehigh from Muhlenberg where he spent two seasons on the offensive staff. He coached the tight ends and halfbacks and also served as video coordinator and operations assistant.
Â
Among Mutunga’s duties at Muhlenberg were coaching special team position groups, recruiting high school student-athletes and serving as offensive coordinator for the junior varsity team. He was also responsible for weekly breakdown and analysis of offensive and special teams film and for coordinating daily filming of practice and games.
Â
Mutunga starred collegiately at Gettysburg College where he was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter at running back from 2007-10. He had 2,804 career rushing yards and earned All-Centennial Conference honors three times. He tied a Centennial Conference record with five rushing touchdowns in one game and finished his career third on the Gettysburg all-time list with 38 touchdowns.
Â
A native of Bel Air, Maryland, Mutunga graduated from Gettysburg in 2011 with Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Economics.
