BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series with the Navy Midshipmen at J. David Walker Field on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Mids 3-1, taking two out of three games in the series in the process.
"Our guys played fundamentally sound baseball all weekend and our pitching really stepped up against a talented Navy lineup," said Peter E. Bennett '63 head coach Sean Leary. "Winning this opening series is a testament to our team staying focused and positive after a challenging week."
Lehigh (5-11, 2-1 PL) starting pitcher Jake Mulvehill impressed with six strikeouts, three hits, one earned run, and zero walks in 6.1 innings to earn the win. Cole Kochanowicz picked up his second save of the season after striking out one batter in 2.2 scoreless innings. Navy (13-6, 1-2 PL) starter Owen Phypers was credited with the loss despite recording nine punchouts in 4.2 innings.
Mason Ceccarelli got things started for the Mids in the top of the first with a solo home run to give Navy and early one-run edge. From that point on, Mulvehill locked in on the mound, retiring a staggering 17 of his next 18 batters through the sixth inning. While Mulvehill took care of things on the mound, Lehigh's offense provided some offense. A two-run homer from Dom Patrizi in the bottom of the third put the Mountain Hawks on top before another Patrizi RBI lifted Lehigh to a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning.
Kochanowicz entered in relief of Mulvehill in the top of the seventh, immediately forcing a double play to end the inning. The sophomore reliever did his job, facing only eight batters through the final two innings of action to seal the victory and series win for Lehigh.
First-year Silvio Giardina had a big day at the plate, going 3-3 with a run scored. Patrizi finished the day going 1-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Aidan Quinn and Trystan Crawford also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. on the road to take on Penn.
