Mountain Hawks to Visit Morgan State Friday Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of five consecutive duals, No. 21 Lehigh will make the trek to Baltimore to face Morgan State Friday evening. It will be the fourth-ever meeting in the series and the first contested at Morgan State. Lehigh picked up a hard-fought 29-11 win at Army West Point Feb. 1 to move to 3-0 against EIWA opponents. The Mountain Hawks won seven bouts, scoring bonus points in five of those wins. Senior Max Brignola erased an early 5-0 deficit to come back and pin Gunner Filipowicz in a top 15 battle at 165 to put Lehigh up 22-4 after six bouts. The Mountain Hawks also received a technical fall victory from Luke Stanich at 141 and major decisions from Sheldon Seymour (125), Logan Rozynski (157) and Rylan Rogers (184). Morgan State is in its second season as an EIWA member. The Bears are still looking for their first dual win this season.

Lehigh went on the road and picked up its fifth straight dual win as the Mountain Hawks downed Army West Point 29-11 Feb. 1 at Christl Arena. The Mountain Hawks won seven of the 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in five of those wins. Sheldon Seymour opened the dual with a major decision over Charlie Farmer secured at the final buzzer. After Army picked up a major decision win at 133, Lehigh rolled off four consecutive victories to take control of the dual. Luke Stanich won by technical fall, Logan Rozynski used a headlock to secure a late major decision at 157 and Max Brignola rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to pin Gunner Filipowicz in a top-15 battle at 165. Rylan Rogers added a major decision at 184 and JT Davis picked up an overtime 4-1 decision over nationally-ranked Wolfgang Frable at 197.

Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro's next dual meet win will be his 200th as coach of the Mountain Hawks. With one more victory, Santoro would be the second coach to reach 200 dual wins at Lehigh. The legendary Billy Sheridan won 223 duals from 1912-52. Add in 48 dual meet wins at Maryland and Santoro has 247 dual wins in his coaching career.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from InterMat, FloWrestling and WrestleStat, while five are ranked by Amateur Wrestling News and The Open Mat. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour (125) is the highest ranked Mountain Hawk according to four of the five outlets, while sophomore Luke Stanich (141) and senior Nathan Taylor (285) are also ranked in the top 10 across the board. Sophomore Logan Rozynski (157) and senior Max Brignola (165) are also ranked by all five outlets. InterMat, FloWrestling and WrestleStat rank from 1-33, while AWN and The Open Mat rank 1-20.

Morgan State is still looking for its first dual win of the season as the Bears enter Friday's match at 0-13 overall and 0-4 in EIWA action. The Bears were in California last weekend where they dropped duals at California Baptist and Cal Poly. In EIWA action, Morgan State has faced Drexel, Navy, Bucknell and Hofstra so far this season. Morgan State has one nationally-ranked wrestler in Eugene Harney, who is 28th at 149 according to InterMat. Harney is currently the only ranked wrestler at 149 in the EIWA. Morgan State is coached by National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Kenny Monday, who was a three-time Olympian and the first black wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal.

Friday's dual marks just the fourth-ever meeting between Lehigh and Morgan State in wrestling. The Bears visited Grace Hall last November. The previous two duals were at the Wolverine Quad in Ann Arbor, Mich., in January 1993 and January 1995. The Morgan State wrestling program was brought back after a dormant period prior to the 2023-24 season. The Bears were announced as the 12th member of the EIWA in September, 2024.

Lehigh will wrestle its final two home duals next weekend as the Mountain Hawks host Penn Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and Bucknell Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will honor their senior class prior to the Feb. 14 Bucknell dual.
