BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's wrestling head coach Brazel Marquez was named the NCAA Super Region 2 Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, it was announced prior to the start of the Super Region 2 meet on Friday.
Marquez has generated immediate success in the Mountain Hawks' first season as a varsity sport. Lehigh went 15-2 in its inaugural dual season, winning team titles at the Warrior Duals and Gannon Women's Wrestling Duals.
This past weekend, the Mountain Hawks dominated the Super Region 2 meet at West Liberty, crowning four individual champions, and accumulating 151.5 points, 35.5 more than the second place team.
All nine of Lehigh's postseason entrants earned top six placements, with Audrey Jimenez (110), Abbi Cooper (117), Aubre Krazer (131) and Kryssceah Ravenelle (138) capturing individual regional titles. That quartet plus Genevieve An, who finished third at 180, gives Lehigh five qualifiers for the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships, March 6-7 in Coralville, Iowa.
As one of six regional coaches of the year, Marquez is now a finalist for the NWCA National Coach of the Year award, which will be presented at a later date.
Brackets for the NCAA Championships will be unveiled Feb. 27.
