BALTIMORE – The Lehigh softball team split its two games Saturday at the UMBC Round Robin. The Mountain Hawks battled back after losing a three-run lead in the seventh to defeat Canisius 6-5 in eight innings and then fell 9-5 to Manhattan in their second game of the day.
Â
Senior Julia Mrochko homered in both games and classmate Maddy Schmeiser delivered the game-winning hit against the Golden Griffins as Lehigh moves to 10-14 on the season.
Â
Canisius scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before Mrochko homered to right center in the bottom half to tie the game. Lehigh took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Rory Dudley doubled to right center and then scored the go-ahead run on a triple by junior Abbey Tabaka. First-year Lizzie Kern then doubled home Tabaka to put Lehigh up 3-1.
Â
With their lead cut to 3-2 in the third inning, the Mountain Hawks put up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Dudley that was followed by a double to left field by Tabaka.
Â
The Golden Griffins tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh capped by a two-out, two-run double by Rosie Gomez.
Â
Junior Chloe Hess came on to pitch the eighth inning and after a sacrifice bunt moved the go-ahead run to third base, Hess struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, Mrochko bunted first-year Kelly Fricker to third before Schmeiser singled up the middle to bring home the winning run.
Â
Lehigh out-hit Canisius 10-9 with Dudley and Tabaka both registering two.
Â
First-year Madison Finnerty started in the circle and allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Senior Maria Urban got the final out of the seventh before giving way to Hess, who earned the victory.
Â
Sophomore Peyton Sward led off the Manhattan game with a single to right field and scored the game's first run on a ground out by Schmeiser.
Â
Dudley homered with one out in the fourth inning to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Sophomore Maddy Clark retired the first 10 batters she faced before running into trouble in the fourth. A walk and an error were followed by a three-run Sophia Kiseloski home run to give the Jaspers a 3-2 lead. A second Lehigh error brought home another unearned run as the Mountain Hawks trailed 4-2 after four.
Â
A sixth-inning RBI single by junior Sydney Parlett brought Lehigh within 4-3, but Manhattan answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The inning featured four walks and a wild pitch for Lehigh, while Manhattan also brought home runs with a sacrifice fly, a single and then Lindsey Hoag's two-run double.
Â
After Sward led off the seventh with a single, Mrochko hit her second home run of the day and third of the season to bring the Mountain Hawks back within four. Schmeiser reached on an error before Manhattan recorded the final two outs to end the game.
Â
Lehigh once again had 10 hits, to just six for Manhattan. Sward, Mrochko and Parlett all recorded two hits against the Jaspers.
Â
Clark allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits over 3.2 innings, while Finnerty was charged with the final five runs.
