WASHINGTON - Lehigh women's basketball rolled to its eighth straight victory, defeating American 67-52 Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena. The Mountain Hawks improved toÂ
19-4 (10-1 P) and the Eagles dropped to 1-21 (1-10 PL).Â
"We have a lot of offensive weapons," said head coach Addie Micir. "We have a lot of tools in the toolbox that we need to use. I thought we took really good threes, we made only a couple of them, but if you look at our offensive rebounding, we got boards off of them. So as long as we know what shots we're shooting, we're really good with them. I thought Meghan O'Brien had a great game."
Lehigh's eight-game winning streak matches its longest win streak since the 2009-10 season when the Mountain Hawks won eight consecutive games.Â
Senior guard Ella Stemmer paced the way with a team-high 16 points per game. Stemmer was one of three Mountain Hawks to finish in double figures. Senior forward Meghan O'Brien chipped in 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and fifth-year senior wing Maddie Albrecht tallied 12 points.Â
Lehigh went into halftime with a 30-26 lead after the Mountain Hawks ended thesecond frame on a 6-0 run. Tied at 26 with 58 seconds left in the first half, that would be the last tie of the game. O'Brien gave Lehigh the 28-26 lead with 55 seconds in the second quarter and the MountainMountain Hawks would carry their lead for the remainder of the game.Â
Lehigh used a strong third quarter to secure the win, holding a 20-7 advantage in the third frame to take a 50-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. While the Eagles outscored the Mountain Hawks 19-17 in the fourth quarter, Lehigh's lead would be enough to pull out the victory on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks shot 24-of-62 (38.7%) from the field and 3-of-24 (12.5%) from long range. The Eagles shot 19-of-46 (41.3%) and 2-of-16 (12.5%) from deep.Â
Lehigh had 16 more shots than American after the Eagles committed 21 turnovers. Lehigh committed a season-low of six turnovers.Â
"During the bye week, we broke down the nuances," Micir said. "A shot is not a turnover, we would rather have more shots, more good things can happen."
The Mountain Hawks held a 35-33 advantage in rebounds. Senior guard Colleen McQuillen corraled a career-high of nine rebounds.Â
Cecelia Kay led the way for American with a team-high 24 points.Â
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will host Navy on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Lehigh's Swifties and Swishes: Taylor Swift Night.Â
