Mountain Hawks Battle In 6-1 Loss To BYU

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After picking up a win over Rider in the season opener, Lehigh men's tennis returned to action from the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday morning to host the Big 12's Brigham Young University Cougars. The Mountain Hawks gave the Cougars some very competitive matches but ultimately lost 6-1.
Lehigh (1-1) and BYU (6-1) began Saturday's dual in doubles play. The Cougars' number one team of Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs bested Lehigh's Marc Blekhman and Sean Jaeger 6-2 to begin the day. A minute later, BYU's Tygen Goldammer and TJ Wells defeated Rafael Gracie and Jackson Morash at number two, clinching the opening doubles point for the Cougars. As a result, the doubles match between Jose Murariu/Ofer Hacohen and Redd Owen/Hardy Owen did not finish despite Murariu/Hacohen leading 4-3 at the time.
The first singles match to finish was at number two, where Thayne picked up a two-set victory over Murariu to put BYU ahead 2-0. However, Blekhman responded for the Mountain Hawks, picking up a two-set victory of his own over Fuch's to put Lehigh on the board.
The next match to finish was at the number five spot where Goldammer bested sophomore Benedict Horn-Bourque 6-4, 6-3 to put BYU one win away from clinching the dual. After dropping the first set at number four 6-3 to BYU's Adam Chodur, junior Jackson Morash pulled out a 6-3 win of his own in set two to force a third set. Chodur came away victorious 6-3 in set three, which awarded BYU the dual meet victory.
The final two matches would play out following BYU's clinch. At number six, Wells defeated Hacohen in two sets after a tiebreak win in set one. After picking up a 7-5 win in set one over Redd Owen at number one, Jaeger dropped a narrow 7-6 (7-3) decision in set two before ultimately falling in set three.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, February 15 to host Sacred Heart at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center at 12 p.m.
