
Mountain Hawks Struggle Offensively in Loss to Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Lehigh men's lacrosse suffered a 10-7 loss to Fairfield Friday night at Rafferty Stadium. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fell to 0-2 and the Stags improved to 1-0.Â
Turnovers proved to be the difference on Friday with Lehigh finishing with 26. Fourteen of Lehigh's 26 turnovers were caused. The Stags committed 17 of their own turnovers. Fairfield held a 40-23 advantage in shots and a 25-14 advantage in shots on goal.Â
Both teams got off to a slow start on Friday. Eli Adams scored the game's opening goal 10 minutes into the game. The Stags took a 2–0 lead early on after John Okupski scored 30 seconds after the ensuing goal.Â
Senior midfielder Dakota Eierman put Lehigh on the board with 4:06 remaining in the first frame, but that would be the only goal of the first half for the Mountain Hawks, who trailed 4-1 at halftime.Â
The Mountain Hawks came out soaring to start the second half, scoring four unanswered goals. First-year midfielder Chris Rathwell notched his first collegiate goal, giving Lehigh the 5-4 lead with 3:45 remaining in the third frame, but that would be the first and last lead of the day. The Stags responded to Lehigh's 4-0 run with a 4-0 run of their own to take a 8-5 lead.Â
Eierman scored his third and final goal of the day to pull Lehigh within two goals with six minutes remaining in the game, but the Mountain Hawks were not able to claw back from their deficit.Â
Eierman led the way with a hat trick on Friday. Junior midfielder Grant Rodny (2G) and first-year attackman Luke Breslin (2A) also netted multiple points.Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Heath stood on his head despite the loss, making a career-high 14 saves. Fairfield's Owen Hirsch finished with seven saves.Â
Lehigh lost the faceoff battle, going 8-of-20 at the stripe. Sophomore Connor Riley had a career-high day, going 4-of-8 at the faceoff 'x." Riley also scored his first collegiate goal, which came in Lehigh's 4-0 run. Senior Sean Dow won 4-of-12 battles at the dot.
For the second straight game, junior defenseman Richard Checo finished with three caused turnovers.Â
Fairfield's Julian Radossich caused a game-high of seven turnovers, one off the NCAA single-game record. Devin Lampron notched a game-high of four goals to lead the way for the Stags.Â
The Stags held a 36-21 advantage in ground balls on Friday.Â
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will host Cornell on Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.Â
