Mountain Hawks Drop Pair To App State To Open Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lehigh softball team opened play at the Liberty Invitational by dropping two games against Appalachian State Friday at Liberty Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks scored first in game one but the Mountaineers rallied to claim a 3-1 victory. Appalachian State scored the first five runs of the nightcap on the way to topping Lehigh 8-3.

Junior Sydney Parlett had two hits in game one against the Mountaineers and first-year Kelly Fricker had a hit in each game of the twin bill.

It took just three batters for Lehigh to take the lead in game one, with sophomore Peyton Sward singling with one out and then scoring on a double to right center by senior Julia Mrochko.

Appalachian State (5-11) took the lead with two runs in the third on an RBI single by Makayla McClain and then a well-executed double-steal with McClain and Julia Girk.

The Mountaineers added a run in the fifth as Grace Barrett singled home McClain.

Lehigh put together a rally in the top of the seventh, with junior Abbey Tabaka drawing a one-out walk and Parlett following with a single, but Sophie Moshos got a ground ball double play to end the game.

Appalachian State out-hit Lehigh 7-5 in game one with McClain going 2-for-2 to lead the way.

Junior Chloe Hess started in the circle for Lehigh and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Sophomore Maddy Clark threw a scoreless sixth for the Mountain Hawks.

Appalachian State jumped on Lehigh early in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Macy Hamby and a RBI double by Taylor Chumbley.

The Mountaineers added two more runs in the third to up their lead to 5-0.

Lehigh scored its first runs of the nightcap in the bottom of the third as Fricker doubled home Sward and first-year Helen Woloshyn to bring the Mountain Hawks within 5-2. Appalachian State committed three of its five errors in the third inning.

Hamby and Chumbley delivered RBIs in the fourth to extend App State's lead to 7-2 and Sward brought home Lehigh's third run in the fifth with a fielder's choice that scored first-year Wrigley Fanter.

McClain capped a strong day for the Mountaineers with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning.

Sejal Neas and Bel Varadi limited Lehigh to just two hits, with Neas charged with all three unearned runs over four innings of work.

First-year Madison Finnerty allowed five runs on five hits over three innings with four walks, while Clark allowed three runs on three hits over the final four frames.

The Mountain Hawks (2-10) will continue action at the Liberty Invitational on Saturday with games against Georgetown (12 p.m.) and host Liberty (4 p.m.).
