Win Over Georgetown Highlight's Lehigh's Saturday At Liberty Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Day two of the Liberty Invitational saw the Lehigh softball team split two games Saturday at Liberty Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks began their day with a 4-3 victory over Georgetown before falling to host Liberty 15-5 in five innings.

Sophomore Peyton Sward went 3-for-3 against the Hoyas with a walk and a run scored, while first-year Kelly Fricker had two hits against Liberty and drove in three of Lehigh's five runs against the Flames.
Â
Lehigh is now 3-11 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks and Hoyas were scoreless through three-and-a-half innings of play before Lehigh broke through with three runs in the fourth inning. Consecutive singles from Sward and Fricker started things off, with junior Sydney Parlett doubling home Sward for the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Maddy Schmeiser scored Fricker and then senior Rory Dudley doubled home Parlett to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead.

Georgetown (8-4) scored its first run in the fifth inning on an Emily Strittmatter sacrifice fly, with Lehigh answering on a leadoff double by senior Lindsey Martin in the bottom half. Two batters later, Sward plated Martin with an infield single.

The first three Hoyas reached in the fifth with a Hollie Pardini RBI single and then a run-scoring double play bringing Georgetown within 4-3.

Strittmatter singled with one out in the seventh to put the tying run on base. Lehigh recorded the final out of the game to secure the win upon appeal as Dayanara Campos had not been properly re-entered into the game after leaving for a pinch runner.

Junior Chloe Hess went the distance in the circle for Lehigh, allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts to earn her first victory of the season. Sward had three of Lehigh's nine hits.

Lehigh started fast against a tough Liberty squad with Sward working a one-out walk in the first and then Fricker following with a run-scoring double to right center. After advancing to third on the throw, Fricker scored Lehigh's second run on a Julia Mrochko sacrifice fly to left center as the Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

Liberty (15-4) answered with a nine-run bottom of the first to take control of the game. The inning featured four RBI singles, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly before Rachel Roupe capped the frame with a two-run home run.

Lehigh loaded the bases with one out in the second, with junior Abbey Tabaka picking up an RBI with a fielder's choice.

The Flames added four more runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Fricker delivered two more runs with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Roupe led Liberty at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Fricker had two of Lehigh's three hits. Martin had the other.
