NORMAN, Okla. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up their opening weekend series against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon from L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Mountain Hawks dropped a 12-1 decision in a seven-inning run rule loss.
Starting pitcher Malachi Witherspoon earned the win for the Sooners (3-0), striking out six batters while walking two with three hits and one earned run allowed in five full innings. Junior David Andolina was credited with the loss for Lehigh (0-3) after allowing five earned runs through the first two innings.
The Mountain Hawks opened the game's scoring in the top of the first inning. Junior Dom Patrizi walked and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Junior Aidan Quinn singled through right field, sending Patrizi home to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sooners had a quick response in the bottom of the first, scoring three off of a Jaxson Willits sac-fly, Easton Carmichael home run and Dawson Willis RBI double. Oklahoma added to their lead in the second on a bases loaded walk and another sac-fly. The Sooners would add three more runs in the third inning to take an 8-1 lead through the first three frames.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Willis, Gavyn Jones and Kyle Branch each recorded RBI singles to extend the Oklahoma lead to 11. The Mountain Hawks were unable to get any runs across the plate in the top of the seventh, and with the run rule in effect, the game was over.
Quinn finished the day 1-2 with an RBI single while first-year Edwin Betances recorded the second hit of his career in his lone plate appearance. Junior Ryan Davis also tallied his second hit of the weekend in Saturday's loss.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday, February 21 to take on Fairfield on the University of Richmond's campus in Virginia. Lehigh will also play two games against Richmond next weekend.
