No. 14 Lehigh Set For Weekend Duals Versus Longtime In-State Foes

12/4/2025 1:33:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Back in action for the first time in two weeks, No. 14 Lehigh will face two longtime in-state foes this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will welcome No. 20 Pittsburgh to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday in Lehigh's 2025-26 home opener, and then will hit the road to face top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA Champion Penn State on Sunday. The Nittany Lions are Lehigh's most often-wrestled opponent, with Sunday's dual the 113th in the series. Pittsburgh is Lehigh's fifth most-wrestled foe. The Mountain Hawks last competed at the National Duals Invitational, Nov. 15 in Tulsa, Okla. Lehigh went 1-2 at the event with a win over Arizona State and losses to Nebraska and Illinois. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour went 3-0 at 125 to improve his season record to 5-0. Sophomore Logan Rozynski went 2-1 at 157 including a major decision victory over Nebraska's Antrell Taylor, the defending NCAA Champion.

Friday's Pittsburgh match is Youth Night and will also feature a schedule magnet giveaway for all fans while supplies last.

Lehigh went 1-2 Nov. 15 at the National Duals Invitational, presented by Paycom, at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a 35-7 setback to second-ranked Nebraska, then came back to defeat Arizona State 24-18 in the first round of consolations. Lehigh's final dual of the day was a 21-13 loss to No. 15 Illinois, which eliminated the Mountain Hawks from the competition. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour went 3-0 at 125 to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Logan Rozynski (157) and senior Max Brignola (165) both won two bouts Saturday. Rozynski had one of the day's biggest wins as he knocked off defending NCAA champion Antrell Taylor of Nebraska by a 9-1 major decision in Lehigh's first match of the day. Lehigh won six matches against Arizona State with the victory clinched with a first-period pin from junior Remy Brancato-Roed in his dual meet debut at 197.

Six Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from InterMat, FloWrestling and WrestleState, while five Mountain Hawks are ranked by The Open Mat and three are ranked in the top 10 by Amateur Wrestling News. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour (125) and senior Max Brignola (165) are ranked in the top 10 across the board, while sophomore Logan Rozynski is ranked by all five outlets at 157. Ryan Crookham (133), Luke Stanich (141) and Nathan Taylor (285) were all ranked in the top 10 across the board in preseason rankings, but have been removed from most rankings since they have yet to compete this season.

Lehigh is 13-4 in home-opening duals under Pat Santoro and has won four of its last five home openers. The lone loss during that span was the last time Pittsburgh visited in 2023.

Deferred first-year Dom Federici made his first career dual meet appearance at Journeymen WrangleMania, competing at 174. At the National Duals Invitational, true first-year Anthony Evanitsky (149) and junior Remy Brancato-Roed (197) both made their dual debuts, wrestling two out of Lehigh's three matches. Brancato-Roed pinned Arizona State's Max Acciardi in the first period to clinch a dual win for Lehigh. Evanitsky picked up a win in sudden victory over Illinois' Danny Nini. While not their dual debuts, sophomore Logan Wadle and first-year Mason Ziegler picked up their first career dual meet wins against Duke and Virginia, respectively. Deferred first-year Bekhruz Sadriddinov could make his debut at 174 this weekend.

Pittsburgh brings a 3-1 dual record into Friday night's match. The Panthers last wrestled on Nov. 21 when they were blanked 36-0 at Iowa. Pitt opened its season with a dual win at Navy on Nov. 1 and then posted a runner-up finish at the Navy Classic the following day. The Panthers also have dual wins over Buffalo and Princeton. Five Panthers are nationally ranked by both InterMat and FloWrestling, led by Mac Stout, who is fifth at 197. Luca Augustine (174) and Dayton Pitzer (285) are also in the top 15 according to both outlets. Keith Gavin is in his ninth season as Pittsburgh's head coach.

Pitt is Lehigh's sixth oldest rival with Friday's dual marking the 70th meeting in a series that dates back to 1916. Lehigh leads the series 45-22-2. Pitt has won five of the last six duals in the series, with Lehigh last winning inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in November 2021. Pat Santoro is 9-7 in duals against his alma mater.

Top-ranked and four-time defending national champion Penn State defeated Oklahoma in its dual opener and will visit Drexel Friday before the Mountain Hawks visit Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions had nine individual champions at the Nov. 23 Black Knight Invitational at Army. Penn State has four No. 1 ranked wrestlers, including 2025 NCAA Champion Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and 2024 NCAA Champion Levi Haines (174). Penn State has a ranked wrestler at all 10 weight classes. NCAA wrestling legend Cael Sanderson is in his 17th season as Penn State's head coach.

Penn State serves as Lehigh's most-often wrestled opponent. Sunday's dual marks the 113th meeting of Lehigh's most-contested series. Lehigh and Penn State met at least once in 87 consecutive seasons before the 2020-21 meeting was erased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nittany Lions have won the last 14 duals in the series. Lehigh won the first two duals with Penn State under Pat Santoro before the Nittany Lions' recent run of success. The Mountain Hawks' last dual win over the Nittany Lions was Cael Sanderson's first dual as Penn State head coach in Nov. 2009.

Friday's dual begins at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, while Sunday's match at Penn State is set for a 1 p.m. start.

Lehigh will break for final exams and will return to action at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals, Dec. 21 in Nashville, Tenn. The Mountain Hawks will have a rematch with Illinois and will also face Iowa State in Nashville.
