FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The battle of 2025 NCAA Tournament teams went to host Fairfield Saturday night with the Stags handing Lehigh its first loss of the season 88-60 at Mahoney Arena. The Mountain Hawks' shooting kept them in the game through the first 20 minutes. Lehigh had a strong start to the third quarter, but the shots stopped falling in the second half and Fairfield capitalized, shooting 45 percent from the field and making 14 3-pointers.
Â
Junior Jessie Ozzauto led Lehigh with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting as Lehigh falls to 1-1 on the young season. Ozzauto also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds for the second straight game.
Â
Lehigh finished the game shooting 33 percent from the field (17-of-51), with the Mountain Hawks shooting 45 percent in the first half and just 22 after halftime. The Mountain Hawks shot just 5-of-23 from deep, with Ozzauto connecting on 3-of-4 and sophomore Belle Bramer and first-year Leia Edwards both making one 3-pointer.
Â
Fairfield, the two-time defending MAAC champions, moved to 2-0 behind 30 points from Meghan Andersen, who led four Stags in double figure scoring. The Stags turned 16 Lehigh turnovers into 29 points.
Â
A Bramer layup brought Lehigh within 18-17 with 1:44 left in the opening quarter before the Stags reeled off six straight points to lead 24-17 after one period. Fairfield closed the first half on an 11-3 run, including eight straight points from Andersen to lead 47-33 at halftime.
Â
Ozzauto pulled Lehigh within seven on two different occasions in the third quarter, as the Mountain Hawks outscored the Stags 14-7 over the first 4:17 of the period. Fairfield closed the third quarter with an 18-2 run to take a 72-49 lead after three.
Lehigh converted 11-of-12 free throws in the final quarter but the Stags were able to extend their lead as high as 30 points. The Mountain Hawks were 21-of-24 from the free throw line Saturday night led by junior Whitney Lind, who was 6-for-6 and finished with eight points.
Â
"There were some positives, like the way we came out in the second half," said Lehigh head coach Addie Micir. "We showed a spark and a response that looked like Lehigh basketball. Fairfield is a good team, and a veteran team that knows how to win. We will take some lessons from them and move forward.'
Â
Junior Gracyn Lovette and Edwards also finished with eight points, with Edwards making her collegiate debut.
Â
Fairfield held a 43-31 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards.
Â
Lehigh will play its next three games at home, beginning Tuesday when the Mountain Hawks welcome La Salle to Stabler Arena for the home opener with game time set for 6 p.m.
