Lehigh Drops Spring Season Opener to Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's tennis opened up the spring slate with a 5-2Â loss to Villanova Friday afternoon at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center.
"Overall, I left today's match feeling pleased and optimistic for the season ahead," said head coach Sophia Geier. "Between missing a decent portion of our team today and some adversity throughout the week, we were able to buckle down and compete at a high level, which is a huge win in my book tonight. I'm proud of how the girls fought, and we will continue to build on this competitive spirit throughout the season."
The Wildcats opened up Friday's competition by winning the doubles point and they would continue to carry the momentum for the rest of the match.Â
First-year Alina Shyani picked up the lone point for Lehigh on Friday, pulling out a victory in three sets against Maggie Gherig. Shyani won the first set 7-6, dropped the next set 6-4 and battled back to win the third set 6-3.
First-year Ronit Khromchenko played a 10-point tie-breaker, winning the third set 11-9 against Valieriia Kornievea. First-year Skye Yonehara played an eight-game pro set falling 8-4.Â
Next up, Lehigh will host Rider on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center.Â
