Lehigh To Host Navy For Coaches vs. Cancer And Salute To Service

1/28/2025 1:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After earning a massive victory over rival Lafayette at home on Saturday, Lehigh returns to action from Stabler Arena on Wednesday evening for a meeting with the Navy Midshipmen for Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets. Both teams will be recognizing the Coaches vs. Cancer program as well.

The Coaches vs. Cancer (CvC) program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Since 1993, this initiative has leveraged the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.

Navy (7-14, 4-4 PL) owns the all-time series advantage over Lehigh (7-12, 2-6 PL) 55-36 and has won six of the last ten meetings. The two teams split the season series last year, with Navy taking the first game on January 17 by a score of 71-69 and Lehigh winning 77-65 on January 31. Head coach Dr. Brett Reed's all-time record against Navy is 21-15.

If Lehigh wins, they would earn their eighth win of the season and improve to 3-6 in Patriot League play. Lehigh would win consecutive games for the first time since January 2.

The Mountain Hawks squared off against Lafayette College at Stabler Arena on Saturday evening in the season's first installment of The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The Mountain Hawks led by 22 after the first half and never looked back, routing the Leopards 86-47 to snap a six-game losing skid. Lehigh had one of its best shooting performances of the season, going 57.1% (32-56) from the field and 52.9% (9-17) from three. On the other, Lafayette struggled mightily, going 31.5% (17-54) and a staggering 0.0% (0-22) from three. Lehigh dominated on the glass, outrebounding Lafayette 41-24. Nasir Whitlock led the way with a game-high 21 points while Edouard Benoit (17p), Tyler Whitney-Sidney (15p) and Hank Alvey (12p) scored in double-figures for Lehigh.

The Midshipmen enter Wednesday's game having won their last two contests against Boston U. and most recently Army West Point by a score of 66-53 on Sunday. Navy started league play 2-0 before dropping four straight. The Mids now sit at 4-4 in sixth place in the Patriot League. The team is led offensively by junior guard Austin Benigni, who earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors a year ago. Benigni ranks second in the league in scoring at 17.5 points per game. Junior center Aidan Kehoe nearly averages a double-double of 10.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. The Mids are led by head coach Ed DeChellis in his 14th season at the helm of the program.

Following Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks will head north to face the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday, February 1 at 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be listened to on Fox Sports 94.7 FM and 1230 AM.
