Late Rally Gives No. 19 Lehigh 23-16 Win At Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – Lehigh's first dual meet of 2025 came down to the very end. Trailing 16-11 with three bouts remaining, the 19th-ranked Mountain Hawks batted back to win the final three bouts, holding off an upset bid from Binghamton with a 23-16 victory Saturday at Events Center. The dual came down to the final bout at heavyweight with graduate student Owen Trephan, in his Lehigh debut, clinching the dual for the Mountain Hawks with a 9-1 major decision over 18th-ranked Cory Day.
The Mountain Hawks captured six of the 10 bouts Saturday, with junior Carter Bailey (141) and senior Michael Beard (197) joining Trephan with bonus point victories to help Lehigh (2-2, 2-0 EIWA) improve to 9-0 all-time against the Bearcats.
Junior Sheldon Seymour opened the dual with a 7-5 decision over Carson Wagner at 125. Seymour scored the opening takedown in the first period. A takedown for Wagner off a Seymour shot left the match tied 5-5 after two, but Seymour earned an escape and a stalling point in the third period to claim the victory.
Binghamton (4-6, 2-1 EIWA) picked up its first win at 133 as Micah Roes pinned first-year Logan Wadle, who bumped up from 125 in place of Ryan Crookham in his dual debut, in the first period.
Bailey put Lehigh back on top with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Ryan Hartung at 141. A takedown and two sets of near falls staked Bailey to an 11-0 lead after one period, with Bailey adding an escape and takedown early in the second to end the match at 3:14.
Senior Malyke Hines followed Bailey with a 12-8 victory over Caleb Sweet at 149 to put the Mountain Hawks up 11-6. Hines gave up the first takedown but reversed and added a takedown in each period.
The Bearcats battled back against the middle of Lehigh's lineup, claiming three straight victories to take a 16-11 lead after seven bouts. Fin Nadeau broke a 1-1 tie with a third period takedown to beat first-year Griffin Gonzalez at 157. At 165, first-year Zeke Dubler dropped a 9-1 major decision to Carter Baer, with the Bearcat scoring a late takedown to secure the major.
Binghamton's third straight win came at 174 as Brevin Cassella won 3-0 over sophomore Rylan Rogers behind a third period reversal and rideout.
Things swung back in Lehigh's favor at 184 as sophomore Caden Rogers gutted out a 2-1, sudden-victory decision over No. 23 Will Ebert. In regulation, Ebert rode out the second period to earn riding time advantage, while Rogers earned a stalling point in the third to tie the bout at 1-1. In sudden victory, Rogers pressured Ebert into another stalling call with the penalty point giving Rogers the victory.
A 21-4 technical fall secured by Beard in the third period against Cayden Bevis gave Lehigh a 19-16 lead heading into the final bout.
Trephan, ranked ninth nationally, faced Day in the deciding bout at 285. Day opened the scoring with a second period escape with Trephan answering right away with a takedown to take a 3-1 lead. Trephan escaped to open the third and added another takedown before riding out and earning a stalling point to secure the major decision and clinch the win for Lehigh in is debut.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face No. 12 Cornell at noon. Sunday's dual will be broadcast on ESPN+.
