BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite a valiant effort, Lehigh men's soccer was bested by Vermont 3-2 Tuesday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh was awarded a corner kick with 16 seconds left as junior midfielder Jason Pynadath crossed it to junior defender Sam Davis who headed it right on goal, but Vermont was there for the goal-line clearance to hold onto the win. With the loss, Lehigh dropped to 1-4-1 while the Catamounts improved to 2-1-2.
"I am really pleased with how we responded," said head coach Dean Koski. "We were down two goals and fought back, going down another goal, and we found our way back into it again. We put pressure on them, and that's what we need to do in order to win games, but more importantly, we're not going to win many games when you give up three goals, and our defensive commitment and execution in the box in the last two games have not been up to our standards, but we will get there."
The Catamounts struck first, scoring the game's first two goals. Yaniv Bazini found the back of the net 12 minutes into the game and Andrew MIllar doubled the Catamounts lead in the 18th minute.Â
Vermont held its two-goal lead for the majority of the game until Perry Kingson connected on a penalty kick in the 51st minute after the Mountain Hawks were fouled in the box. Max Murray put Vermont back up by two goals after he headed it in on a set piece, but junior forward Yusef Gueye pulled the Mountain Hawks back within one goal in the 76th minute. First-year midfielder Shea Coughlin was credited with the assist on Gueye's goal and it marked the first collegiate point of his career.Â
Despite a couple of shots in the last minutes of regulation, Lehigh was unable to find the equalizer.Â
The game was fairly even on Tuesday with Lehigh holding a 14-12 advantage in shots, a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and the Catamounts holding an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.Â
Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski tallied five saves in net as did Vermont's Lou Liedtka. Gueye finished with a game-high of four shots on Tuesday.Â
"We are going to have our hands filled with every game we play," Koski said. "Every team we play is going to be good and games are going to be close. When the margins are slim, it's going to come down to really good defending and taking care of our chances, and if we can do that, we are going to put ourselves in a position to win."
The Mountain Hawks will open up Patriot League play at Holy Cross on Saturday at 6 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
