WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Despite strong second half momentum, the Lehigh field hockey team fell 5-1 to the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a good test for us. I'm proud of how our team adapted after our halftime talk," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "The changes we made helped us be a bigger attacking threat in the second half. Now, we just need to capitalize on our goal scoring opportunities."
Lehigh started off hot in the first quarter, picking up a penalty corner 1:22 into the game. The Mountain Hawks were unable to capitalize and Monmouth tallied the first goal of the contest with 9:03 on the clock, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks continued their momentum, recording a second goal at 5:59 to extend their lead to 2-0 going into the second quarter.
Monmouth's Stella Goddard-Despot recorded her first goal of the season in the second quarter, as Lehigh trailed 3-0 heading into intermission.
Lehigh opened the second half strong, holding Monmouth scoreless for over the first 10 minutes of the period. The Hawks recorded the first goal of the second half at 4:04 to take a 4-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks started off the fourth quarter on the front foot, earning three penalty corners in the first two minutes. In this span, Lehigh recorded six shots.
With 12:40 left in the game, first-year Riley Thurston put the Mountain Hawks on the board with her first-career goal.
A late penalty stroke goal solidified Monmouth's 5-1 win over Lehigh.
Monmouth outshot Lehigh 20-15, while the Mountain Hawks out-cornered the home team 9-6.
Lehigh (0-1) heads home tomorrow at 1 p.m. to host Wagner. Sunday's contest will be the program's Youth Day celebration.
