
Lehigh Picks Up First Win Of The Season Over Wagner

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team picked up its first victory of the 2024 campaign on Youth Day, defeating Wagner 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Ulrich Field.
The Mountain Hawks opened scoring 4:30 into the first quarter as junior Maddie Kandra netted her first goal of the season off an assist from junior Eleni Kountroubis.
With 1:11 remaining in the first half, fifth-year Julia Gatelein carried the ball into the top of the circle and put Lehigh up 2-0 off a reverse stick shot.
Wagner came out strong in the second half, holding a 7-2 shot advantage, but the game remained 2-0 into the fourth period.
Within the first minute of the closing quarter, Wagner was awarded a penalty stroke. The Seahawks' Charlotte Muller put her team on the board as Lehigh led 2-1.
Wagner maintained momentum after their first goal, tying the game up at 2-2 with 9:40 remaining in the match.
On a Lehigh counterattack opportunity 32 seconds later, junior Lela Boermeester fed a ball across the goal mouth, deflecting off a defender's stick and Kountroubis connected giving Lehigh a 3-2 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni recorded three saves while Wagner's Saar Van Dalen tallied five.
Wagner (2-0) held a slim 16-14 margin in shots and out-cornered Lehigh 11-2 with eight corners in the second half.
Lehigh (1-1) welcomes Yale at 6 p.m. on Friday at Ulrich Field.
