PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Lehigh women's rowing concluded their season on Friday at the Patriot League championships on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Mountain Hawks claimed first place in the second varsity eight petite final, second place in the varsity four final and third place in the first varsity eight petite final to earn an eighth place finish overall in the championship standings.

"Solid racing across the team and a unified mentality was what we were looking to deliver," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee head coach Peter Costas. "Great to see tough and responsive pieces in the petite finals, and Franki Morrell closes out her career as a Mountain Hawk crossing the finish line first."

The first race of the day for the Mountain Hawks was the first heat in the varsity four at 8 a.m. Lehigh raced against Boston U., Georgetown, Bucknell, and Loyola (Md.) in their heat. The Mountain Hawks finished fourth with a time of 8:43.345, which placed them into the petite final later in the afternoon.

Next up was the second varsity eight, whose heat began at 8:20 a.m. The Mountain Hawks were again paired with Boston U., Georgetown, Bucknell and Loyola (Md.). Lehigh again took fourth place in the heat with a time of 7:31.789, sending them to the petite final.

For the first varsity eight, the Mountain Hawks were paired with Boston U., Georgetown, Holy Cross and Loyola (Md.) for an 8:40 a.m. start time. Lehigh again claimed fourth out of five competing boats, crossing the finish line in 7:32.129 to qualify for the petite final.

For the petite finals, Lehigh would face Loyola (Md.) and Colgate in each of the three races. The varsity four was up first, which saw a neck-and-neck race between the Mountain Hawks and Raiders the entire way. With both teams virtually even headed into the final 500 meters, Colgate ultimately pulled ahead to edge Lehigh by three seconds.

In the second varsity petite final, the Mountain Hawks claimed their second consecutive victory after winning the same event last year. Lehigh held a lead for the whole race, crossing the finish line in 7:32.366 to earn six points in the standings.

Finally, the first varsity eight faced off against the Raiders and Greyhounds in their petite final. The Mountain Hawks finished in third at a time of 7:20.535.

The women's rowing team now sets its sights on the offseason.

"I'm excited for the toughness the team showed in responding to narrowly missing out on some of the grand finals, and what that toughness means for the bright future of their racing careers," said Costas.
